Advancing mammography: evaluating the performance of artificial intelligence in estimating mammographic breast density - SpringerOpen

A study published in the *Egyptian Journal of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine* evaluates the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI) system in estimating breast density from digital mammograms, which is crucial for breast cancer risk assessment. The retrospective study included 592 female patients, assessing breast density via both experienced radiologists and AI. Results showed almost perfect agreement between the AI system and one of the radiologists (κ = 0.879) and moderate agreement with the other (κ = 0.599). The findings suggest that AI can provide consistent and objective assessments of breast density, potentially reducing variability in interpretations and enhancing mammography workflows. However, the study calls for further multicenter validations to strengthen the applicability of AI tools in clinical practice and their impact on outcomes like cancer detection rates.
